Ethereum Foundation And OA Summon zkAPI For Stealth Private AI Payments 🕷️🖤

The Ethereum Foundation just teamed up with the Open Anonymity Project to drop zkAPI, a zero-knowledge protocol letting you pay for AI services and APIs without anyone tying your identity to the requests 💀. Living right on Ethereum mainnet, this system splits payment records from the actual prompts and queries sent over, tho it still leaves some network vibes exposed ✨.

Breaking Down How zkAPI Hides The Money Trail From Requests 🖤

The Open Anonymity Project announced their collab with the Ethereum Foundation back on September 25, 2026, sharing their public AI chat services called OA-chat. The foundation also threw zkAPI some love on October 2 calling it a way for private AI. The protocol got its start from Ethereum researcher Davide Crapis and Vitalik Buterin himself, while the Open Anonymity crew handled the client, server, smart contracts and browser bits 🔥. Users drop ETH straight into the ZkAPIVault contract on mainnet first. That deposit turns into a commitment using a Merkle tree, keeping the spending balance as a private note chilling on your device 🌑. At session start the browser spits out a zero-knowledge proof showing you have enough funds and haven’t spent them yet. Verification happens without revealing which deposit or your identity 👀. Once verified an API key with a spending cap gets issued and the prompt flies straight from browser to the AI provider. When the key dies you grab a usage receipt, the system pulls the amount from your private balance, and a one-way nullifier stops any double spends 🔮. The whole thing runs on Groth16 proofs, BN254 crypto and Poseidon hashing so payments stay private yet verifiable, plus you can yank remaining funds directly from the vault even if servers go dark 🕸️.

What Still Stays Visible No Matter What 😈

zkAPI locks down the payment link but not the content itself. Providers still peek at prompts, IP addresses and timing patterns, so matching sessions stays possible. The team suggests running Tor with a fresh circuit each time because old chat history or your style can leak identity links. This project aligns with Buterin’s latest obsessions around proofs and verification in everyday DeFi moves fr.
