HSBC and Standard Chartered Just Ignited Their First Live Tokenized Deposit Transfer on SWIFT’s Blockchain Ledger 🦇🖤

HSBC and Standard Chartered just completed the first live tokenized deposit transaction on SWIFT’s blockchain ledger. This milestone hit on August 19 only six weeks after the network welcomed its starting group of 17 banks 🖤.
Payment messages flowed between HSBC’s Tokenized Deposit Service and Standard Chartered’s tokenized setup with all obligations captured on both systems. SWIFT’s ledger acted as the orchestration layer matching and netting everything before final settlement on regular rails 🌙.
“HSBC’s interoperability transaction with Standard Chartered via SWIFT is a landmark moment for the promise of tokenised deposits” said Lewis Sun Head of Digital Currencies at HSBC. Mark Willis Head of Emerging Payments Transaction Services and Digital Assets at Standard Chartered added that tokenized deposits form a key pillar of their digital assets strategy aimed at full end to end solutions 💀.

Hyperledger Besu Powers SWIFT Ledger 🔮

SWIFT built the ledger MVP on open source tools with an Ethereum Virtual Machine setup using Hyperledger Besu to blend right into the wider digital asset scene 🦇. The network runs its own orchestration for workflows validation and interbank coordination while Consensys shaped the early prototype back in September 2025.
Seventeen banks across six continents are now gearing up for live tests including ANZ BNP Paribas BNY Citi DBS MUFG UBS and Wells Fargo. HSBC has already placed bank money on ledgers before like their S$400 million digital bond deal that sped primary settlement from five days down to two 🌹.
“With our new ledger capability we’re extending the trust and stability of established finance into the frontiers of digital money” said Thierry Chilosi Chief Business Officer at Swift 🕸️.

Competing Network Eyes 2027 Launch 🕯️

US banks are building their rival rail as The Clearing House develops a tokenized deposit network called The Bridge with JPMorgan Chase Bank of America Citigroup and Wells Fargo targeting launch in the first half of 2027 and opening to all American banks. Bank of America’s Mark Monaco noted clients are not beating down the door for tokenized deposits yet.
SWIFT already shifts the equivalent of world GDP every two to three days across more than 200 markets while 75 percent of its payments land with beneficiaries inside 10 minutes 🌑.
