Lagarde straight up slid into the Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis DMs to block Binance from snagging that EU license fr. 💀 The tea spilled by WSJ sources says she flexed some major influence even tho she had zero official power here.
The Tea On Lagarde’s Secret Move 💼
Binance tried sliding through Greece’s Hellenic Capital Market Commission for a MiCA pass that would unlock the whole bloc. By early June the application had already passed technical checks. The 40 day wait was over with no drama. Their AML officer gave the thumbs up and other countries were getting ready for the heads up. Then boom between June 7 and June 15 everything flipped. An official told Binance Lagarde was straight up against it after she whispered to Mitsotakis back in May. 😈 That move apparently overrode even Greece’s own finance minister because of election vibes timing.
Her main beefs were Binance’s past US guilty plea on laundering plus fears it would hype dollar stablecoins while the ECB pushes their own digital euro. One legal expert called it straight political interference since the ECB has no formal say on these approvals at all.
Binance’s Quick Pivot To France 🖤
Reuters dropped early hints about the Greece risk in mid June but Binance pushed back saying their team of 1,500 compliance folks had everything sorted. That didn’t stick tho. They later confirmed they were ditching the Greece app and hunting approval elsewhere. 👀 Ireland and Latvia also ghosted them over past fines and company structure. Coinbase already locked Luxembourg while Kraken has the nod so Binance is now betting on France where they have a smaller registration and talks with the AMF for that full 27 country MiCA win. 🔮
